The seventh-seeded Indian pair survived a three-game thriller to beat Malaysia's World No. 7 team of Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee in their first round match at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
After claiming a keenly contested opening game 23-21, Sat-Chi conceded the second 19-21. But the 2022 champions closed out the match with a third game win, 21-16.
The team led by Ammad Butt, finally secured their first victory with a 2-1 win over Japan and then delivered a decisive 5-1 win against China, to enter the semi-finals. Their final pool match ended in a narrow 2-1 loss to India.
Now, the top four teams have entered the semifinals and the last two teams will have to fight for the fifth spot on the table. India have won all of their five matches. Pakistan are second with two wins and two draws.
"They have always been a formidable team. They defended quite well, and it was very difficult to penetrate," said 27-year-old Shetty after the match. "Their service retrieving was also good. They have improved immensely, but we are happy we could come back in the third."
24 7 slotsShetty and his younger partner Rankireddy (24) are currently ninth in the BWF men's doubles rankings, and today's match against the Japanese pair will be their second meeting on the tour. At the Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024, Sat-Chi defeated Okamura and Mitsuhashi 21-15, 21-17.
Okamura and Mitsuhashi, the world number 19th pair, defeated the Indian duo of P Krishnamurthy Roy and KS Pratheek in the first round, 21-19, 21-16, of the ongoing BWF Super 750 event.
